Field tip: Publishing “My Network Places” in citrix – 2 things you need to know

Recently came across a rather large use case for this application as a large number of file servers have been migrated to 2 centralized data centres. Result of which being file access using explorer in branches could be quite slow depending on distance (or vis-à-vis latency).

From doing a quick test utilizing the network places for users and accessing via a citrix published application from a server in the same data center resulted in much improved performance (the greater the gain on users’ coming in from a greater distance needless to say)

2 things did come across though

1)

When publishing My Network Places needed to employ the below string in the location details (working directory empty)

“C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe” ::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D} “%*”

2)

On using Iexplore.exe or explorer.exe need to add the following registry key otherwise won’t launch

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Citrix\wfshell\TWI

Value Name: LogoffCheckerStartupDelayInSeconds
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: An integer that denotes the time to wait for the application to start (10 Hexadecimal recommended)

Not “terribly” recommended by Microsoft to do above but been finding the published app stable and very popular with the user base.
